We are looking for an Advocacy and Asia Lead to join our global team and support our advocacy efforts globally (60% FTE) and help grow Business for Nature’s engagement in Asia (40% FTE).

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a multi-stakeholder international coalition. We are looking for a passionate individual with experience in working with a policy audience, including in the Asian region, understanding of environmental issues and ideally experience working with business.   

To be successful, you will need to be a self-motivated team player who has excellent organizational and communications skills with the ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects and maintain a high level of attention to detail. It would be helpful if you have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and geographies. 

We work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. You need to be comfortable working autonomously, with the ability to lead projects from inception to completion.  As a small team operating across the world, you should feel comfortable working virtually.

Term: Permanent position, ideally starting May 2023 

Location: Anywhere, provided you have the right to work, ability to work remotely and travel occasionally 

Position: Full-time or part-time negotiable

Salary range: $US20,000 – $US50,000 full time  

This is a good-faith range based on a full-time (40 hour/week) employment contract. Salary may vary based on number of hours worked, local market and experience. The range listed is one component of the total compensation package for employees.

Business for Nature is a global coalition that brings together influential organizations and forward-thinking companies to accelerate business action and advocate for ambitious policies to reverse nature loss by 2030.    

Business for Nature’s current advocacy priorities are focused on:  

  1. Implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD) Global Biodiversity Framework 

  2. Mandatory corporate assessment and disclosure of nature related risks, impacts and dependencies 

  3. Reform of Environmentally Harmful Subsidies and Accountability and legal frameworks (such as ecocide)  

In order to scale and speed business action and policy ambition globally, we are starting to take a regional approach by setting up this new role in Asia, that will specifically include activities in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and China.

Key responsibilities 

Working closely with the Advocacy Director and the National Engagement and Advocacy lead, you will:  

Support Business for Nature advocacy activities (60%)  

  • Monitor the evolution of the global political landscape on biodiversity  

  • Support the development of BfN’s policy positions   

  • Support a range of activities relating to our advocacy work, including stakeholder mapping, coordination of meetings with policy makers 

  • Prepare briefing and speaking points to support advocacy activities   

  • Help organize BfN advocacy events including developing agendas, sending invitations and booking venues 

  • Support team with contact management  

  • Attend relevant meetings and conferences where appropriate 

Lead development of the Business for Nature Asia Hub (40%)  

  • Develop a strategy for engagement with businesses, regional partner organizations and policymakers in the Asian region 

  • Map existing and potential partners active on nature and biodiversity who engage directly with businesses  

  • Set-up a regional partners group with organizations from  different countries to strengthen regional engagement  

  • Support the Advocacy Director and regional partners by engaging with policy makers in the region to support the development of the CBD Global Biodiversity Framework National Biodiversity Strategies and Plans (NBSAPs) and other advocacy priorities  

  • Work closely with the business action team to grow business engagement in the region and capture examples of business action from the region 

  • Help map existing policies and policy gaps to assist with policy development  

  • Engage with our China activities 

Qualifications, skills and experience 

  • A degree in political sciences, environmental management, economics, sustainable development, or any other relevant field 

  • Experience in advocacy/policy and engaging directly with policy-makers  

  • Experience engaging governments in the Asia region (at local, national, sub-regional or regional level) 

  • Good knowledge of regional stakeholders, including business organizations, working on nature and sustainability in the Asia region  

  • Technical expertise on BfN’s advocacy priorities (outlined above) would be a plus but not obligatory  

  • Experience with intergovernmental organizations (i.e. WTO, ICC) or UN multi-lateral processes (i.e. CBD, UNFCCC, UNGA…) would be a plus 

  • A talent for working in multi-stakeholder partnerships 

  • Excellent English written and oral communications skills particularly to convey complex ideas, thoughts and concepts for a general audience 

  • Proficiency in other languages from the Asian region would be a plus 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills including a capacity to track details. 

  • Strong sense of responsibility for taking projects from inception to completion. 

  • Ability to work independently
