Watch the highlights video from our webinar on 3 March ‘Introducing Busines for Nature’s position on the updated zero draft of the Post-2020 GBF’.

Our three key takeaways from the webinar:

1) An ambitious Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (the Framework) is vital to create a stable operating environment and level playing field for business. Governments have a unique opportunity at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)’s 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to adopt a transformative, meaningful, implementable and enforceable Framework that sets the direction for businesses to scale and speed up action and investment to reverse nature loss by 2030, while creating sustainable growth, generating clean jobs and potentially unlocking $US trillions in economic opportunities.

Business is a key actor in our common journey towards transformative change and sustainability.
— Dr. Anne Larigauderie, Executive Secretary of IPBES

Opening remarks from Eva Zabey, Executive Director, Business for Nature, Dr. Anne Larigauderie, Executive Secretary of IPBES, Liu Ning, Deputy Executive, Director of the Office of the Executive Committee for CBD COP 15, and Alexander Shestakov, Director of the Science Division, CBD Secretariat made this clear and set the stage for a rich discussion.

2) Businesses recognize the need for transformative change, and leading companies have come together to share nine key suggestions to strengthen the Framework’s ambition. Business for Nature’s position on the Framework was developed together with more than 100 businesses head-quartered in 31 countries, and businesses joined our event to share these nine suggestions with policymakers. We were delighted to hear from business leaders including Alice Durand-Reville, Danone, Marcelo Bicalho Behar, Natura &Co, Michael Koech, Safaricom, Keith Tuffley, Citi and Melissa Miners from Unilever, who emphasized the vital need to strengthen the ambition of the GBF, because healthy societies, resilient economies and thriving businesses rely on nature.

The science is clear - we have 10 years to reverse the loss of biodiversity... This is not only a moral obligation, but also an economic imperative, as each and every business relies on nature to prosper.
— Marcelo Behar, Vice-President, Sustainability and Group Affairs, Natura &Co

This position builds on Business for Nature’s policy recommendations and on the momentum of our Call to Action, Nature Is Everyone‘s Business, through which 700 companies are urging governments to adopt policies now to reverse nature loss.

3) Dialogue between business and policymakers is growing. In addition to hearing from businesses, we were delighted to have a number of policymakers react to and show support for our nine suggestions. Government speakers included:

  • Stefan Leiner, Head of Unit Biodiversity, European Commission

  • Victor Alvarado, member of the CBD Informal Advisory Group on Mainstreaming for Mexico

  • Kat Miller, Director, Biodiversity Policy at Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, Government of Australia

  • Dr. Theresa Lim, Executive Director, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, member of the CBD Informal Advisory Group on Mainstreaming, Government of Philippines

  • Dr. Jane Stratford, Head of the United Kingdom CBD Delegation, Government of the United Kingdom

  • Katie Beckett, CBD and Nagoya Protocol Team Lead, Government of the United Kingdom

  • Sandra Müller-Volk, Deputy Head of Division, International Cooperation on Biodiversity, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Government of Germany

The Post-2020 Framework is not just a framework for government – if we as a global community are to succeed, it must be fit for all, including the private sector. Business have a critical role to play.
— Jane Stratford, Head of the United Kingdom CBD Delegation
