Business webinar on the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

On Thursday 28 January, Business for Nature hosted an informational webinar for business on the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). If you missed the live event, you can view and share the recording below.

During the session, speakers from Business for Nature, the CBD Secretariat, and the China COP15 Executive Committee shared key information about why and how businesses must engage in the run up to COP15. With over 1000 people registered and 550 online, this event clearly demonstrated the growing private sector interest in and commitment to advocating for ambitious nature policies, and engaging with the CBD process to ensure an ambitious Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Our three key takeaways from Thursday’s webinar:

  1. The Convention on Biological Diversity’s 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) represents a critical moment for nature in the coming year. At COP15 in Kunming, China, governments are expected to adopt a new Post-2020 Global Framework for Biodiversity (the Framework), that is the equivalent for nature as the Paris Agreement on climate change. This Framework should adopt a Global Goal for Nature for 2030 and Business for Nature is calling for this Global Goal to be ‘halting and reversing nature loss by 2030’. COP15 is expected to take place in 2021 but the exact dates are still unknown due to COVID-19. Register for our newsletter to stay tuned.

  2. A strong business voice is needed to raise the ambition, including through participation at the Business and Biodiversity Forum at COP15. Businesses must engage in the discussion around the negotiation of the Framework and call for higher ambition so we reach a transformative and implementable international agreement that sets the world on a path to reversing nature loss by 2030. The Business and Biodiversity Forum will be a two-day event at COP15, focused on generating discussion between businesses and governments, and by doing so, bring business considerations into the negotiations.

  3. Businesses can already engage with the CBD and advocacy process, for example by:
