We are looking for an Advocacy Lead to join our global team and support our advocacy efforts. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a multi-stakeholder international coalition. We are looking for a passionate individual with experience in working with a global policy audience and following multilateral policy processes, understanding of environmental issues and ideally experience working with business. 

To be successful, you will need to be a self-motivated team player who has excellent organizational and communications skills with the ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects and maintain a high level of attention to detail. It would be helpful if you have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and geographies.

We work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. You need to be comfortable working autonomously, with the ability to lead projects from inception to completion.  As a small team operating across the world, you should feel comfortable working remotely.

Term: Permanent position, ideally starting Q1 2024

Location: Anywhere, provided you have the right to work, ability to work remotely and travel occasionally

Position: Full-time or part-time negotiable

Salary range:  USD 40K-85K depending on location, for full time position

This is a good-faith range based on a full-time (40 hour/week) employment contract. Salary may vary based on number of hours worked, local market and experience. The range listed is one component of the total compensation package for employees.

About our advocacy work

Through our advocacy work, we aim to unify and amplify an ambitious leading business voice that calls on governments to adopt transformative policies, legislation and regulation that in turn would lead to accelerating business action on nature. Our objective is therefore to provide the courage, comfort and technical expertise to governments so that they adopt, implement and enforce ambitious policies that ensure the creation of a nature positive economy by 2030. We actively engaged in the Biodiversity COP15 negotiations of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Now that the Framework is adopted, our advocacy strategy is centered around ensuring its successful implementation at global, regional and national level.

Business for Nature’s current advocacy priorities are focused on:

  1. The overall implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, including the adoption by governments of ambitious National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), that provide clear roles and responsibilities to business and outline the upcoming regulatory framework.

  2. The adoption by governments of mandatory requirements for corporate assessment and disclosure of nature-related risks, impacts and dependencies that follow high-quality principles.

  3. The reform of environmentally harmful subsidies and incentives to ensure the elimination of perverse subsidies and the increase of positive incentives, to ensure that financial flows are aligned with the mission of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Key responsibilities 

Monitor the political landscape on nature and biodiversity

  • Follow and monitor global and multilateral processes related to nature and biodiversity, including but not limited to the CBD, UNFCCC, UNCCD, UNEP, Plastic Treaty, WTO, UNGA…  

  • In collaboration with regional leads, monitor the evolution of the key national political landscape on biodiversity and  identify engagement opportunities with key countries

  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and conferences where appropriate

Support the development of policy positions

  • Support the development of BfN’s policy positions, including the update of the BfN’s policy recommendations, in depths position on priorities like mandatory assessment and disclosure and harmful subsidies

  • Develop overviews of key legislations and implications for businesses

  • Prepare briefing and speaking points to support advocacy activities 

Support advocacy outreach

  • Lead stakeholder mapping

  • Coordinate outreach and meetings with policy makers

  • Help organize BfN advocacy events including developing agendas, concept notes, sending invitations, booking venues and coordinating the logistics

  • Support team with contact management and website management

  • Support the organization of BfN’s Advocacy Working Group calls and activities

  • Collaborate with regional leads for the roll out of advocacy activities at regional / national level

Topic expert on CBD GBF implementation

  • Monitor and engage in the preparation for COP16

  • Follow expert working groups including on resource mobilization, monitoring framework, mainstreaming and other relevant topics, and engage as appropriate

  • Monitor the publication of NBSAPs

Build the capacities of businesses on advocacy

  • Work closely with business engagement team to ensure businesses are equipped to engage in advocacy activities

  • Ensure our asks to businesses are clear, simple and up-to-date

  • Work with the communication team to ensure policy speaking points are clear and up-to-date

Qualifications, skills and experience 

  • A degree in political sciences, environmental management, economics, sustainable development, or any other relevant field

  • Experience in global advocacy/policy and engaging directly with policy-makers

  • Technical expertise on BfN’s advocacy priorities (outlined above) would be a plus but not obligatory

  • Experience with intergovernmental organizations (i.e. WTO, ICC) or UN multi-lateral processes (i.e. CBD, UNFCCC, UNGA…) is a plus

  • A talent for working in multi-stakeholder partnerships

  • Excellent English written and oral communications skills particularly to convey complex ideas, thoughts and concepts for a general audience

  • Strong organizational and time management skills including a capacity to track details.

  • Strong sense of responsibility for taking projects from inception to completion.

  • Ability to work independently
