Business for Nature is hiring an intern to join the Advocacy team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone starting their career to work in a multi-stakeholder international environmental coalition. We are looking for a passionate individual with an understanding of policy and advocacy.

We work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. You need to be comfortable working autonomously.  As a small team operating across the world, you should feel comfortable working remotely. 

Title: Advocacy Intern, Business for Nature

Reports to: Advocacy Director, Business for Nature

Term: 6 months, starting date January 2024

Location: Flexible, ability to work remotely

Position: Full or part-time negotiable

Salary: USD 1200/month (full time)

Business for Nature (BfN) is a global coalition of more than 85 influential partner organizations as well as forward-thinking companies. Together, we drive credible business action and policy ambition to achieve a nature-positive economy for all by 2030.

About our advocacy work

Through our advocacy work, we aim to unify and amplify an ambitious leading business voice that calls on government to adopt transformative policies, legislation and regulation that in turn would lead to accelerating business action on nature. Our objective is therefore to provide the courage, comfort and technical expertise to governments so that they adopt, implement and enforce ambitious policies that ensure the creation of a nature positive economy by 2030. We actively engaged in the Biodiversity COP15 negotiations of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Now that the Framework is adopted, our advocacy strategy is centered around ensuring its successful implementation at global, regional and national level.

Business for Nature’s current advocacy priorities are focused on:

  1. The overall implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD) Global Biodiversity Framework, including the adoption by governments of ambitious National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), that provide clear roles and responsibilities to business and outline the upcoming regulatory framework.

  2. The adoption by governments of mandatory corporate assessment and disclosure of nature related risks, impacts and dependencies that follow high-quality principles.

  3. The reform of environmentally harmful subsidies and incentives to ensure the elimination of perverse subsidies and the increase of positive incentives, to ensure that financial flows are aligned with the mission of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Advocacy Intern will fulfil the following functions

  1. Policy monitoring: Monitoring the fast-evolving policy landscape at global and regional level, including preparing briefings on important legislations as necessary, mapping the policy environment in specific countries or regions as well as developing presentations and speaking points for Business for Nature representatives at key events.

  2. Research projects: Assist and inform BfN advocacy work through specific research and analysis, for example; to develop case studies. This might include conducting interviews with experts, partners and/or businesses.

  3. Administrative support: Provide general support to the Advocacy team, including contacts and mass mailing management, website management, meeting organizations, note taking in meetings, administrative support based on donor's requirement.

  4. Attend relevant meetings and conferences on behalf of Business for Nature and support the organization of webinars, workshops and other relevant events.

Qualifications, skills and experience 

  • A graduate degree in environmental management, political sciences, economics, sustainable development, or any other relevant field

  • A talent for working in multi-stakeholder partnerships

  • Good English at working level, additional language is a plus

  • Strong organizational and time management skills including good attention to detail.

  • Strong sense of responsibility for taking projects to completion

  • Willingness to learn
