In a time where the health of our planet is increasingly at risk, a growing number of businesses recognize the vital role that they can play in protecting and restoring nature. To support these efforts, Business for Nature, in collaboration with several partners, has developed a Business Action Narrative.

Using a wealth of data and insights, the Business Action Narrative:

  • Provides a clear, strong, and consistent narrative for businesses to take action on nature

  • Serves as a practical resource, helping companies understand the benefits of protecting, conserving and sustainably using nature

  • Outlines  the concrete actions required and the resources available

  • Helps businesses integrate nature-positive strategies into core business functions, driving sustainable value creation

Businesses depend on nature

Nature is the very foundation of our global economy, with more than half of the world’s GDP moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services. However, businesses currently extract natural resources 1.75 times faster than our planet can regenerate them. This unsustainable practice underscores the urgent need for a new relationship between our global economy and the natural world. Increasingly, businesses are facing pressure to address the nature crisis due to growing regulatory pressure, investor expectations and consumer pressure.

The business case for nature action

Taking action on nature and integrating it into your business strategy is not just about mitigating risks; it’s about seizing opportunities.  The World Economic Forum has identified 15 nature-positive transitions that could generate up to $10.1 trillion in annual business value and create 395 million jobs by 2030.

How to take action on nature

The Business Action Narrative explains how businesses interact with nature and how to get started on their nature strategy. It goes through each step of the high-level business actions (also known as ACT-D) outlining the steps  businesses should take and the resources available. ACT-D provides a structured approach for organizations to assess, address and transform their relationship with nature. It leads businesses through four critical steps: Assess, Commit, Transform and Disclose. This systematic approach enables businesses to integrate nature considerations into their strategic business decision making.

Resources to help

To help businesses make the most of the narrative and tailor materials to their audiences and presentation needs, we have developed a range of resources. This includes:

  • A set of Sector Action slides for 12 economic sectors, developed by Business for Nature in partnership with the World Economic Forum, WBCSD and others.

The resources are designed to be flexible and customizable, allowing businesses to choose the most relevant content and tailor it to their needs. They should serve as a valuable tool to help drive internal transformation and foster conversations and action on how a business can incorporate nature-positive practices.

Call to Action

With critical biodiversity negotiations at COP16 fast approaching, the Business Action Narrative highlights the private sector’s vital role in shaping a nature-positive future.
