Why Nature is Everyone’s Business
Nature is at a tipping point. Decades of unchecked human activity have wreaked havoc on the natural world, threatening the foundations of our societies and economies.
But the world is waking up to this threat: 196 countries came together at COP15 in December 2022 to adopt an ambitious agreement to reset our relationship with nature, the Biodiversity Plan (also known as The Global Biodiversity Framework). The Biodiversity Plan offers not just a roadmap but a generational opportunity to reset our relationship with the natural world, with business at the heart of an all-of-society effort to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.
To show your commitment to this nature-positive future, you have signed up to Business for Nature’s Call to Action, joining a growing community of companies who recognize that nature is everyone’s business.
The Call to Action aims to give policymakers everywhere the courage and comfort to adopt more ambitious policies on nature, as countries start to embed the goals and targets of the Biodiversity Plan in their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and prepare to showcase their actions at the UN CBD COP16 in autumn 2024.
To encourage policymakers to aim high for nature, and to inspire other companies in your region or sector to support the shift to a nature-positive economy for all by 2030, we invite you to make your commitment to the Call to Action clear and visible to all your stakeholders by using the resources on this page.
Communications tools
The adoption of the Biodiversity Plan at COP15 was a pivotal moment, with an unprecedented number of companies urging governments to set ambitious policies and enable decisive corporate action.
At COP16 and beyond, the world needs to move from ambition to implementation, with a critical mass of businesses showing their willingness and support to contribute to a nature-positive future and demonstrate the actions they are taking.
The Call to Action is a crucial tool in building this momentum. Throughout 2024 and beyond, we encourage you to:
Promote your organization’s signatory status in your online channels using our CTA communications toolkit (see below)
Publish opinion pieces in business and industry media, or deliver addresses at industry events, to highlight the importance of business leadership and collaboration with governments on nature, including through the Call to Action, using our Speaking Points
Advocacy ideas
Signing the Call to Action means advocating for policies that will help change the economic game in nature’s favor. You can help secure ambitious national and global policies by engaging with policymakers directly or through industry bodies.
Actions you can take to support policymakers set ambitious policies:
Engage in consultations, workshops and other activities organized by your government to contribute to the establishment of national targets and strategies to implement the Biodiversity Plan in your country.
Mention the Call to Action in your ongoing direct political engagement, raising the issue of nature protection in meetings with policymakers or at any events with a policymaker audience. This is especially important in the months leading up to COP16 in autumn 2024 as countries update their NBSAPs and seek to showcase how they are implementing the Biodiversity Plan, with support from business.
Encourage industry trade bodies you are a member of to make ambitious nature restoration, protection and sustainable use one of their key lobbying points to increase the business voice calling for action.
Encourage businesses within your value chain to press policymakers to take action as part of their engagement activities.
To support this, Business for Nature has also prepared a Responsible Policy Engagement (RPE) guide. Other useful Business for Nature resources include:
